Our New Home Away from Home....

Corey made the long drive from Utah to Virginia. A week and a half later, I flew out to VA with two kids and a dog. I was a bit nervous how that would work out. The kids and the dog did great on the flight. Of coarse entertainment and treats are the secret.

The kids and I were so excited to see Corey. A week and half is a long, especially for the kids. Corey had the apartment all organized with groceries and everything! Usually I spend a week trying to do that. He is so sweet. The kids were thrilled to see their missed toys and check out the new place.

We have enjoyed the warm weather and exploring the area. Everything is in full bloom with spring here. The kids and I love looking at all the flowers. While Corey is at work, the kids and I have found new places to explore.

There is a ton of historical things to see all around us. Its starts with the street names to seeing where major historical events took place. Our second week here, we checkout out Yorktown, VA. It was Virginia National Park week, so all the national parks were free. Since Corey and I have already been to Jamestown, we thought that we would check out Yorktown. The kids and I went to see Yorktown Battlefield. (This is where General Cornwallis was forced to surrender to George Washington in the Revolutionary War. This secured independence for the U. S. and changed world history!) The kids really enjoyed looking at the life-like model ship, solider uniforms, and cannons. They thought the "hankies" (a.k.a. hammocks) hanging in the sleeping quarters on the replica ship were so funny. We had to go look at the "hankies" twice. Corey and I were impressed that you could still idtenify the battle ground trenches after all these years.

We also went to Yorktown Beach. The water was absolutely freezing, but that did not stop Peyton and Annisten from wading in the water. I told Corey some of the historical background that I had learned from the kids and I's earlier trolly tour. Corey playfully made fun of me for giving him a history lesson. For someone who is a history major, he doesn't seem to be that interested in history. I always tease him about this and ask him the same question, "Are you sure that you were really a history major? What did you actually study in school...." :) Yorktown Beach is not the most scenic beach, but it makes the perfect Sunday afternoon getaway to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.

How neat that you get to do all sorts of fun things in new places each summer. Sounds like you have and will learn a lot of interesting new things.
